Black Mold In House

Who To Contact If You Find Black Mold In Your Home
You constantly wake up with crusty eyes and are always coughing. You have upper respiratory problems and don't know where all these symptoms are coming from. It's possible you have black mold in your home.
To know for sure if you have mold in your home, you must call a mold tester. Mold does not have to be visible in your home for you to have it. Mold will often reside behind your walls and underneath your flooring. Just because you can't see mold, doesn't mean you don't have it. If you have had any water damage to your home in the past, you should immediately call for a consultation.
Do not attempt to remove black mold yourself. Do not use bleach to clean mold. It only bleaches the color on visible mold. It does not remove mold. When the conditions are right again, the mold will come back to the spot you cleaned and can spread even more. Bleach will not kill mold on porous surfaces such as wood, drywall, ceiling tiles, insulation paper, etc. Mold testers and mold re-mediators wear HAZMAT suits and masks and go through clean room solutions to prevent any airborne illness to their employees.
Call around to different certified mold testers in your area and ask for a consultation. Do not get a consultation done if they are going to charge you. Many companies offer complimentary consultations. The company will come in with infra-red cameras and moisture meters as well as other equipment and test around your house.
If there are signs of black mold, call your insurance company first. You need to find out if your homeowner's insurance will cover mold. If they do cover mold, you will only have to put out money for your deductible depending on your insurance coverage.
Do not sign a contract with the test company right away if they also do mold remediation. Always use a separate mold remediation company. This way the mold test company can check that the mold remediation was done properly. This is to provide the client with a checks and balances. If a company tries to convince you or bully you into using both their services, cut off ties with that company. You want the job done properly and using two companies will insure this.
Your home will be partitioned off so as to not spread the mold to uncontaminated areas. The size of the affected area will determine the duration of the treatment. Your insurance company should put you into a hotel depending on the duration.
If you have ever had water damage in the past such as flooding, a leaky sink, rain entering your home through the walls, get a mold test done 3-6 months after the incident. By doing this, you will prevent the mold from spreading too far if you do have mold.
Do not put off getting mold from your home removed. The longer you wait, the more the mold will spread.
