I'm sure you labor hard to earn a living and it's not the easiest thing to do. So in this article I am going to give you a few facts so you can hastily evaluate your house and find out if you are burning your paychecks. I know that I would love to have the years worth of cash that went through my roof. So lets get started with some facts. Looking for attic insulation in Dallas?

Believe it or not the Department of Energy estimates that 80 million homes in the US are currently under insulated and wasting power. Heating homes is also still the number one use of power in the US. Wow! In this day and age of the highest fuel prices and power conservation awareness this would seem to be a great place to start. Yet it's a topic of very little awareness.

If you live in a climate that has sweltering summers and/or freezing winters it is easy to save 20% or more on your power bills for a modest investment by correctly insulating your attic. My experience is that this investment will pay for itself in as little as one year, after that it's cash in the bank. There is no easier way to make cash than to save cash!

So how do I tell if I require attic insulation? One way to determine that is to look in your attic. Frequently you only have to quick look through the attic hatch and stick a tape measure in the insulation and gauge the thickness. Insulation R-Value (Heat Loss Resistance) varies with different types of insulation, but in general you want to see about 18" for an R-Value of R-49. An easier way to determine your R-Value is to contact a professional insulation contractor in your area. They will do a free estimate for you. If they won't do a free estimate call someone who will! This is worth doing just for their experience in correctly determining R-Values and spotting other problems, but for attic insulation in Dallas, we will make sure you get taken care of.

So I've determined that I should to insulate my attic. Which type should I use? There are four basic types of insulation used in attics. Rolled batts, blown fiberglass, foam spray and cellulose.

Batts: These are a practical solution for small easy jobs without a lot of obstructions. Layers can be overlaid in opposite directions to achieve higher R-Values.

Foam Spray: This material has the highest R-Value of the four types. It requires special equipment and professional installation. This is the most effective insulation but by far the most high-priced.

Blown Cellulose Insulation: This material is very widespread today. You will stumble on this in the majority modern homes. It is basically recycled newspaper that has been treated for fire protection. Cellulose is reasonably priced but will settle in no time and loose R-Value. It also can hold up to 20% of it's weight in moisture which is a bad thing. Cellulose is heavy to start with since it is paper and has thickness limitations. Cellulose can become especially heavy when it absorbs wetness. Being organic mold is always a concern also. I sell, install or recommend Cellulose.

Blown Fiberglass Insulation: This is in my estimation the best attic insulation solution obtainable. As a Insulation contractor in Dallas, Texas we solely use Owens Corning blown fiberglass insulation on our jobs. The material has a good R-Value, is very light, almost no settling (maintains it's R-Value), is non-living so mold is of no concern and retains essentially no moisture to make weight a concern. Given that this material is so light we can blow a job up to much higher R-Values than cellulose. I must also mention more cost effective! which bid would you take for mold remediation?
I discovered mold in my attic and have (so far) two different bids. Do you have any expertise to help me decide which would be the better option? I wonder if one is overkill or if the other isn't enough? I admit, I'm clueless and am seeking advice from every source. House is a 1000 sq. ranch built in 1953. Attic is your basic attic. Mold is a fast growing, wood eating mold. $1,500.00 = remove the mold, treat the wood in both attic and crawlspace, 2 year warranty. $4,500.00 = remove the mold, treat the wood in just the attic, install a ridge vent, remove insulation and replace with new insulation (18 ' deep). much longer warranty, but I can't recall out long. The both said the moisture came from the heavy rains we had these past few months (I'm in Atlanta) and the condensation from coming from the crawl space. I mean condensation from the CARPORT.

Mold on the attic sheathing?
So a house that we are in contract to buy just came back with what we believe is MOLD in the attic sheathing of the roof. The inspector noted that the mold (although he didn't USE the word "mold" in his report) wasn't on the rafters. And it seemed to be localized to one side of the sheathing (north side), not the other. He believes that poor ventilation was to blame, and that by installing a ridge vent would prevent any additional problems with mold and condensation. He didn't detect any leaks, or moisture in the attic at the time, however. The sellers listed their property "as-is," they have agreed to replace the roof (which was on its last leg anyhow), along with replacing the sheathing and installing better venting. My questions are these: 1. See pics below. Is this mold??? Notice the big black spot closest to the ground. 2. What's the likelihood that this sort of attic mold would infect indoor air quality? Should we still pay out of pocket for a mold inspector to do an indoor air quality test? Even if it comes back elevated, my Realtor seems to think that just because it said "as is" that we can't ask them to remediate (however, they ARE replacing the roof, etc.) 3. How would YOU handle a situation like this?? Here's pics of the attic, the NORTH side with the mold: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_gBHzpdG63h...ld_Durant2.JPG And here's the other side that doesn't have mold: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_gBHzpdG63h...ld_Durant1.JPG What do you think?????
